How To Filter Emails By Sender In Gmail

Many of us use our email addresses for business purposes these days. If you do that frequently, chances are you have tons of emails piled up in your inbox, presuming you don’t delete / archive them frequently. Filtering through them is not always an easy thing. Well, what if you need to find a specific email, and you know who sent it, but you don’t remember when. You can always check out email from that specific sender, and see what’s up. In this article, we’ll show you how to filter emails by sender in Gmail. We’ll do that for both the desktop Gmail client (in the browser), and the mobile app. Let’s kick things off with desktop, shall we.

How to filter emails by sender in Gmail on desktop

The first thing you’ll need to do is open the Gmail account you’d like to use, of course. Once you’ve done that, please realize there are several ways you can filter emails by sender. The easiest way to do it is to find the sender amongst your recent emails. Simply right-click on any email he sent, and choose the “Find emails from [contact name]” option.

Once you do that, Gmail will display all emails received from that sender, as you can see in the image provided below. Those emails will be chronological, of course, so you can go through them.

That’s not the only way to do it, though. You can also use Gmail’s advanced search function. Instead of tapping the “Search all conversations” field, you’ll need to tap the “Show search options” icon, which is a part of that field, on the right (shown below).

Once you do that, the advanced search field will open. There you’ll see the “From” option.

Simply type in the email you’re interested in, or start typing the name of the person who sent it, Gmail will likely show you the full email on its own. Once it does that, left-click on the contact you’re interested in. For more accurate results, you can even filter the dates here, include words that the email contains, and so on.

Gmail will sort those emails for you.

How to filter emails by sender in Gmail via mobile app

You can also filter emails by sender via Gmail mobile app. The process here is quite straightforward, as there’s only one way to do it. The first thing you’ll need to do is open the app, and then tap on the “Search in mail” search field at the top.

Once you do that, type in “from:” (without quotation marks), and type in the email you’re interested in. Gmail will recommend you a number of emails / contacts instantly. You can also start typing the name of the contact, not necessarily the email, Gmail will do the rest.

If Gmail finds the email you’re looking for, tap it. If not, type it in, and confirm that by hitting the enter key on your smartphone keyboard. Gmail will then show you all emails sent from that email address.
