Baton changes hands at George Enescu Festival

The Romanian Culture Ministry has nominated Cristian Macelaru to take over as artistic director of the George Enescu International Festival, the country’s largest music event.

He will succeed Vladimir Jurowski, who planned the last three festivals from 2017 to 2021. The festival has been run for 30 years by managing director, Mihai Constantinescu.

Macelaru, 41, who is a Romanian from Timisoara, is music director of the Orchestre National de France and chief conductor of WDR Sinfonieorchester Cologne. He is presently recording the complete works of George Enescu for Deutsche Grammophon.
