In the real estate industry dangers can come from many different directions whether it is assault, robbery and in some cases murder. Those in real estate or property management must be aware of the safety tips to keep them safe while working.
Leslie Dollinger the COO for Better Homes and Garden The Good Life group in Omaha has several years in the real estate and property management industry.
She has her share of tips and stories to share from her own personal experiences.
There is not a universal safety book those in real estate follow so many of them have their own rules while some don’t have any at all.
I was told for many realtors or those in property management it is all about the sale and sometimes safety gets pushed to the back.
They question whether or not to push the issue of having an ID for a potential client or meeting at the office before showing a property occupied or not.
With more and more people having stories and some not ending well more people in this industry are taking more precautions.
Leslie tells me she teaches a lot of situational awareness.
She confirmed sometimes there is a vetting process for renters but they don't always work. When workers visit occupied homes there is always a chance something may go wrong.
Last Thursday it did go wrong for the Creighton University baseball director when he was killed trying to do maintenance on the property. Details surrounding the case have not been released. Another situation in late 2020 a realtor was killed while showing a property.
Leslie says use communication, the buddy system or let someone know whenever you are at a property. She also says go with your gut because if something doesn't feel right you should leave immediately.
These tips were also shared last month for realtor safety awareness month.
