The City of Winnnipeg officially honoured former Jets captain Dale Hawerchuk on Tuesday by naming a portion of Graham Avenue after the 1981 first overall pick. The portion of Graham Avenue between Donald Street and Carlton Street has been named "Dale Hawerchuk Way", right in front of the Jets' arena, Canada Life Centre.
"It is an honour to accept the application to have a portion of Graham Avenue honourarily named for Hockey Hall of Famer and first overall draft pick, Dale Hawerchuk," Winnipeg city councillor Sherri Rollins said back in August about the plans. "We are proud to have Dale's name so closely associated with our city and look forward to making efforts to have his name memorialized in the downtown area."
Hawerchuk was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2019, and completed chemotherapy in April 2020. The cancer returned in early-August 2020, and unfortunately, Dale passed away on August 18th.
"Ducky" as many called him, played nine of his sixteen NHL seasons with the Winnipeg Jets. In 713 games with Winnipeg, Hawerchuk had 929 points (379 G, 550 A), 478 penalty minutes, and was a -93.

He would go on to coach the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League from 2010 to 2019, helping them reach the OHL Final in 2013 when they lost to the London Knights. Hawerchuk helped produce many current NHLers including
