Ruler App by Nikola Kosev

If you’re looking for an alternative to the first app we’ve mentioned, because you don’t like its design, well, this is a great way to go. Ruler App by Nikola Kosev may look more appealing to some of you. You can choose between inches and centimeters, depending on where you live. The app works well on both smartphones and tablets, as it has been designed with both small and large displays in mind.

The app does include measurement history, and it allows you to copy measured length to your phone’s clipboard, so you can paste it elsewhere. The app does include a multi-touch caliper tool functionality. If you find the app inaccurate at first, you can calibrate it real easy, and that’s best to do with a real ruler. The instructions are included in the app, in case you need them.

AR Ruler App by Grymala

We’ve seen quite a few successful AR (Augmented Reality) apps in the market, well, AR can be used for various other things. Measuring objects is one way it can be used. The AR Ruler app has a name that is kind of self-explanatory. This app uses your camera to help you measure various objects. It will help you measure real life objects with your smartphone, basically, and that sounds neat, doesn’t it?

You’ll need to be at a certain distance for this app to do a good job, and at a certain angle. The best of all, this app can actually map objects in 3D, you’ll just need to follow the instructions to get the best results. And yes, it does include your regular digital ruler as well, in case you need to do some quick measuring of a smaller object, and not in 3D. Another thing to note is that the app requires an ARCore library (provided by Google) in order to work.

ARPlan 3D

ARPlan 3D app comes from the same developer as the previous AR app we’ve talked about. The main goal of this app is to help you measure rooms in your house. This app allows you to lay a virtual tape measure ruler on real-world surfaces. This will make measuring rooms much quicker, claims the developer. It can measure the room in general, and also windows and doors.

Do note that furniture will be in the way, though, of course, it cannot really see through it. So this is best-used when there’s no furniture in the room, before you’re about to buy furniture, or something of the sort. The app can also create a side view floor plan for you, as well as a 3D floor plan. It also allows you to share your created floor plans with whomever you want, directly from the app.

Smart Tools 2

Smart Tools 2 is the only app on the list that is not free from the get-go. Most other apps do come with in-app purchases and ads, but you don’t have to buy them before you use them. That’s not the case with this app, but it’s well-worth the money. Smart Tools 2 is an app that combines various useful tools in a single place. One of those tools is a ruler, but there are various other tools included here, some of them do help out with measuring stuff.

There are 6 sets of tools included. You’ll find the following tools here: ruler, protractor, level, thread, compass, metal detector, GPS, sound meter, vibrometer, luxmeter, flashlight, magnifier, and mirror. The app will also help you measure distance, height, width, and area. That’s not all, though, the developer also included a unit converter tool, and a currency converter as well.

Laser Level by EXA Tools

Laser Level is another really useful app for measuring. It includes a laser pointer, a regular 3-mode spirit level / bubble level (libella), and a clinometer (inclinometer) for measuring vertical angles and determining the exact horizontal plane. If those tools fulfill your needs, this app actually works really well. The laser pointer is especially useful, and not something every app of this type has.

The laser pointer tool uses your phone’s sensors (gyroscope and accelerometer), camera, and AR in order to determine the vertical and horizontal levels around you. So, you can use it to measure your closet, bed, door height, and so on. You may need to do some calibrations before you start using the app, but that’s quite simple to do. The app is free to use, though it does come with ads, and includes in-app purchases.

HOVER

HOVER is another interesting app for measuring, though this one is a bit different than the rest. This app aims to measure your house’s exterior, so that you know what you’re dealing with. Needless to say, measuring your house the old fashioned way would take quite a bit of time. This app can help you with that, as it will require around 8 photos to get the job done, depending on the size of your house, of course.

It can measure your entire house, the company claims. It can also render your house in 3D, if that’s something you need. Do note that you’ll need a clear view of your home, even though that’s a given. People are complaining in the comments, as they’re unable to get the measurements as a tree is in the way and so on. Well, if you do have a tree in the way that would prevent you to get far enough to get these measurements, and a clear view of the house (from all sides), then this app may not be for you. You can download it and try, though.

Clinometer

Clinometer, for those of you who don’t know, is an instrument that measures vertical slopes. This app basically creates that tool out of your smartphone, and it allows you to adjust it up to 3 decimal places. A compass with light and magnetic field computation features is also included, as are various unit systems. You can also use your camera to measure via laser level, or a protractor.

This app will keep a history of your measurements, so you can always go back and re-check. You can also export your measurements as an .xls file, if you want, with ease. This is a really compelling app, and it has a high rating in the Play Store for a good reason. If you’re in need of a Clinometer, give this one a try, chances are you’ll like it.
