Boston Red Sox utility player Kiké Hernandez discussed Yankees’ decision to play Sox in potential playoff tie: “They wanted us. They got us.”

The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry runs deep between Boston and New York — and another Yankees slight against the Sox might be enough to power Boston through the playoffs.

While the dust has settled on who is heading to the post-season, the answers were less clear heading into the weekend. The Red Sox and Yankees, along with the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners, could have entered a four-way tie if the right teams had won and lost this weekend.

In the event of a four-way tie, the Red Sox and Blue Jays would have gotten home field advantage, while the Yankees and Mariners would have the option to choose which team they wanted to play.

The Yankees apparently chose to play the Red Sox over the Blue Jays.

Of course, the tie never happened, and it is the Red Sox and Yankees who will be playing each other on Tuesday night. But the Yankees’ sentiment wasn’t forgotten by Red Sox player Kiké Hernandez, who commented on the prime bulletin board material the choice provided.

Hernandez understands that the Yankees likely chose the Red Sox due to the Blue Jays’ recent performance, especially with MVP contender Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Guerrero Jr. just set the record for most home runs by a player 22 or younger with 48, which surpassed his father’s career record of 44.

The franchise also just set their record for single-season home runs, marking a historic season for the Toronto team. If the AL East wasn’t such an incredibly competitive division, the Blue Jays would have easily had their chance in the post-season. All it would have taken was one win to tie with the Red Sox and Yankees.

Understandably, the Yankees’ choice adds fuel to fire a sweet revenge game in the first Wild Card playoff game taking place at Fenway Park. A home game as the first choice for the Yankees in the playoffs? As Hernandez said, “They wanted us. They got us. Win or go home.”
