Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s persistence with playing Scott McTominay and Fred together isn’t going down well with large sections of the Manchester United support.

The duo, despite having a more than impressive record together in the middle of the park, are seen as a defensive partnership in a time where United should be more adventurous.

Scott McTominay was trialled as a lone defensive midfielder in last week’s Champions League encounter with Villarreal, but Unai Emery’s exploits on the counter-attack will surely have ended that experiment.

Manchester United made big investments over the summer, with three positions in dire need of strengthening all being addressed over the transfer window. Jadon Sancho, a longstanding target for Solskjaer, was the second signing of the summer whilst the widely-covered arrivals of Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo followed.

A midfielder was overlooked and now, former Premier League striker Gabriel Agbonlahor says that Aston Villa star John McGinn would ‘walk’ into the Manchester United midfield.
