WATCH: Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen scores brilliant goal against Fulham

More left-footed volleys!

Coventry City took on newly relegated Fulham in their final game before the international break, and ran out 4-1 winners against the West London side in a top of the table clash in the Championship. One of the four goals was scored by Chelsea’s very own Ian Maatsen, who was playing as a left wing-back for the Sky Blues.

In the 61st minute, former Blue Fankaty Dabo fired a cross into the box, which was cleared by the Fulham defense, but only as far as Maatsen at the top of the box. Unlike fellow left back Ben Chilwell on Saturday, Maatsen didn’t go for the first-time volley, taking a touch instead and then powering an angled shot into the far side of the net. What a great strike!

This was Maatsen’s first goal for Coventry, and the second of his senior career overall. The 19-year-old has been ever-present for Mark Robins’ side, starting all eleven of their league matches, with the team sitting in third place at the moment, three points behind league leaders AFC Bournemouth and level on points with West Bromwich Albion in second. (Stoke City, Fulham, and QPR round out the current top six in the Championship.)

Maatsen spent last year on loan in the third division, and he seems to be taking to second division football just as excellently. First division next season then? (Not necessarily immediately at Chelsea, though Marcos Alonso’s contract is up after next season.)
