Jackson Laboratory (JAX), a Maine-based nonprofit biomedical research institution with a location in Farmington, appointed human genetics and drug discovery scientist Lon Cardon as its new president and CEO.

Cardon is a 14-year veteran of the biotech industry, working as a senior vice president at GlaxoSmithKline before joining California biotech company BioMarin Pharmaceutical in 2017, most recently serving as chief scientific strategy officer.

At JAX, Cardon will develop strategy to leverage the organization's expertise in human and animal genetics, and cutting-edge technology like artificial intelligence and machine learning, according to the laboratory.

“The Jackson Laboratory has a unique combination of critical components to finally approach the long-awaited potential of genetics," Cardon said.

Cardon will succeed outgoing CEO Edison Liu, who has helmed the organization for a decade, according to JAX. He is scheduled to start in his new position on Nov. 29.
