After Sony has finally activated the long-awaited gaming feature via a firmware update on last year's Bravia LED TVs, the release of an according VRR update for the PS5 seems imminent.

Sony's much coveted and always sold-out next-gen PlayStation 5 console is a few steps behind the competition when it comes to certain modern gaming features. Microsoft's Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles already support variable refresh rates (VRR) that should prevent screen tearing, but Sony has always asked for patience and vowed to activate the HDMI 2.1 feature on the PS5 with a future software update.

The release of such an update for the PlayStation 5 appears imminent now that Sony has also updated last year's Bravia TVs. According to a report by TechRadar, the 2020 Sony Bravia X900H LED TV, which is named XH90 in other regions, has recently received an update in China that activates VRR (variable refresh rate) as well as ALLM (auto low latency mode). The update should be available in other countries very soon.

Weirdly enough, the VRR update has not yet been released for 2021 Sony TVs like the Bravia X90J (from US$1,098 on Amazon). Nevertheless, it appears that Sony is introducing the gaming feature to all of its devices step-by-step, which means that the VRR update for the PlayStation 5 should be released shortly. Just last month, Sony has released a major update for the PS5 that, in addition to other changes and improvements, activated the console's M.2 SSD slot that can be used for storage expansion with a compatible PCIe 4.0 SSD.
