Man dies in Pocatello house fire

POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI) - UPDATE 4:20 p.m. The Pocatello Fire Department and Pocatello Police Department responded to a house fire at 303 Washington Avenue at 1:08 a.m. Tuesday.

When first responders arrived, there was heavy smoke coming from inside the residence, and two residents had been able to escape on their own. Pocatello Fire Department immediately started looking for the third individual who was reported to still be inside. When firefighters located the third individual, he was deceased.

It took crews approximately 40 minutes to control the fire which extended throughout the main floor of the home. A cat was located in the basement and was removed from the house and turned over to Pocatello Animal Services.

The Pocatello Fire Department and Pocatello Police Department are investigating the cause of the fire, and that investigation is ongoing.

The Bannock County Coroner is overseeing the autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The home did not have working smoke detectors. The Pocatello Fire Department reminds residents to ensure they have working smoke alarms in every sleeping area, in hallways outside of bedrooms, and on every level of the home. Additionally, residents are encouraged to test smoke alarms regularly to ensure they are working. Pocatello police report there were three occupants inside the residence, and two adult males were able to escape the fire.

A family member transported one of the males to the hospital, and his condition is unknown at this time.

One adult male was found deceased in the residence.

The Bannock County Coroner’s Office is investigating the cause of death.

The Pocatello Fire Department and Pocatello Police Department are working together to investigate the cause of the fire.
