Garcia Peoples have announced details for the band’s fifth studio LP, Dodging Dues, out on January 14th via No Quarter Records. Along with Tuesday’s announcement, the Brooklyn psych outfit shared three interwoven singles, “Cold Dice”, “Tough Freaks”, and “Stray Cats”.
Produced by underground luminary Matt Sweeney (Chavez, Zwan, Johnny Cash’s V & VI), Dodging Dues is a tight record by a maturing chuggle quintet that flirts with extensive jamming. The album hosts seven tracks, with all but one falling at or around the four-minute mark. Dodging Dues was recorded in just two sessions, the first one taking place in February 2020 pre-pandemic and another in October of that same year. Yet, even with the rapid deterioration of the outside world, Garcia Peoples still manage to turn in a cohesive project.
That cohesion is evidenced by the group’s decision to release three singles with the album announcement. Beginning with the Floydian landscape of “Cold Dice”, the second song on the album, the group’s continued growth is evident. Moving away from the epic 30-minute title track to 2019’s One Step Behind, Garcia Peoples keep the writing tight as they cast out a clearer message with brevity rather than longevity.
