Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, R, announced in a press release that he and 10 other Republican governors will be holding a press conference along the U.S.-Mexico border on Wednesday to discuss the ongoing border crisis.
The news conference will be held in Mission, Texas, and will also include, among other leaders, the director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, the chief of the Texas Division of Emergency Management and president of the National Border Patrol Council.
The plans for the conference surfaced a few weeks after 18 Republican governors sent a letter to President Joe Biden requesting a meeting at the White House to discuss the surging problems at the U.S.-Mexico border. No meeting has yet to occur.
“The negative impacts of an unenforced border policy on the American people can no longer be ignored,” the letter reads. “Border apprehensions are up almost 500% compared to last year, totaling more than 1.3 million—more people than the populations of nine U.S. states.”
Under the federal Emergency Management Assistance Compact states are empowered to help one another in times of disaster or emergency. Gov. Abbott, along with Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, R, released a formal letter in June asking for more help from “any State that can spare it” amid “the staggering number of violations now occurring in Texas and Arizona.”
Texas state officials are bracing for a massive surge in migrants crossing the border in the coming weeks and months. “Texas National Guard is gearing up at the border for increased caravans attempting to cross the border caused by Biden’s open border policy,” Gov. Abbott tweeted on Oct. 2.
