Manchester City have been linked with yet another top-quality defender as the Cityzens push on to taste their maiden European glory. The Cityzens currently boast of one of the strongest backlines in the game with the likes of Ruben Dias, John Stones, Joao Cancelo, Kyle Walker, and Aymeric Laporte.

Laporte, 27, joined City back in 2018 for a then-record fee of £57 million. Having said that, the dominant duo of Stones and Dias has pushed the Spaniard down the pecking order and the former Athletic Bilbao man is now looking to leave the club in search of playtime.

Laporte was linked with Barcelona as well as Real Madrid this past summer but none of the clubs could meet City’s valuation of £60 million.

With the January window fast approaching, Laporte has been linked again with a move this summer. Keeping that in mind, Metro understands that the defending Premier League champions have already started seeing Villareal’s Pau Torres as Laporte’s replacement at the club.

Pau Torres, 24, is slowly shaping up to become one of the finer center-backs in the game and the Spaniard has been consistently linked with a big-money move away from Villareal. This past summer, Manchester United were considered to be the favorites to sign the 24-year-old but the Red Devils chose to go for Raphael Varane, instead.

Tottenham were also linked with the Spaniard but the player was open to leaving Villareal for a Champions League club.

Torres has got a release clause worth £51 million and the last season’s Europa League winners are not said to be in favor of listening to offers below that.

With Laporte looking set to leave, despite breaking into the XI once again, it could well be only a matter of time before Pep turns to the trusted partnership of John Stones and Ruben Dias. Keeping that in mind, it might not be a bad idea to bring in Pau Torres to the Etihad stadium.
