Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Plot January Move for Brighton’s Bissouma

The Reds are said to want to bring in Yves Bissouma mid-season but we’re dubious a deal is in the works.

Liverpool were linked with a number of midfielders over the summer with the club thought to be seeking a replacement for the departed Gini Wijnaldum. In the end, though, none of those proposed moves came to pass.

Instead, the club were happy to head into the season with their existing options, believing youngsters Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones were ready to take on larger roles. Once a rumoured Liverpool target, though, always a rumoured Liverpool target.

So with the October international break upon us, we find the club being linked once again to a player they were said to be interested in over the summer: Brighton & Hove Albion’s Ivorian midfielder Yves Bissouma.

The claims come from Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur, who was appearing on The Transfer Window Podcast with the Sunday Times’ Duncan Castles, known primarily for his insights into the goings on at Manchester United.

As such, we’re somewhat skeptical of the sourcing. And that’s on top of our natural skepticism when any player previously linked with a Liverpool move that didn’t materialise gets linked again, especially during an international break when news is slow.

Still, as the story is now being amplified by outlets like The Liverpool Echo on the Liverpool end and The Argus on the Brighton end—but without any suggestion it’s based on their own information—it seems worth mentioning.

Yves Bissouma to Liverpool was a rumour that led to nothing in the summer. While anything is possible, we’d bet that this time around it won’t amount to anything, either, and that it’s nothing more than a rehashed rumour for a slow news week.
