Mason McTavish and Trevor Zegras, the biggest fish in the Ducks’ deep talent pool, each scored a goal in a 3-2 shootout victory over the Sharks in an exhibition game Monday night at SAP Center in San Jose. McTavish’s goal was his first in his second preseason game. Zegras also recorded his first goal.

The Ducks selected McTavish with the third overall pick in July.

Zegras, the ninth pick in 2019, scored the shootout winner.

Ducks goaltender John Gibson stopped 42 shots, plus all three in the shootout.

McTavish gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead in the first period. Zegras extended their lead to 2-0 with a power-play goal in the second. Jamie Drysdale, the sixth overall pick in 2020, set up Zegras for a one-timed shot with a cross-ice pass. Sharks goalie James Reimer couldn’t shift over in time to stop the puck.

Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl scored for the Sharks, who outshot the Ducks 44-25.

Gibson denied Jonathan Dahlen and Alexander Barabanov and caught a break when Rudolfs Balcers’ attempt struck the goal post. Zegras beat Reimer after Max Comtois’ shot was stopped in the first round.

“Overall, OK,” Ducks coach Dallas Eakins told the team’s website reporter. “I thought we competed hard. Our execution wasn’t great five-on-five. John Gibson was excellent in net. Great to see him get a full game in and play as well as he did. McTavish has a rocket of a shot. It’s always fun to see a kid of that age score. He was very, very good tonight.”

The Ducks made their first roster moves since training camp began on Sept. 23, trimming their roster to 43 players with one week and two exhibitions remaining. They signed defenseman Ben Hutton to a professional tryout and returned goalie Gage Alexander to Winnipeg of the junior-level WHL.

In addition, the Ducks sent 15 players to San Diego of the AHL.

Jack Badini, Nikolas Brouillard, Trevor Carrick, Kodie Curran, Max Golod, Brendan Guhle, Louka Henault, Bryce Kindopp, Nathan Larose, Alex Limoges, Vincent Marleau, Jacob Perreault, Greg Printz, Danny O’Regan and Brayden Tracey were assigned to San Diego.
