Now that the 2021 season is over, the Orioles did a little housecleaning Monday.
Actually, they did a lot of housecleaning. Heads were rolling throughout the organization.
Don Long, the Orioles hitting coach was the highest profile firing. Trey Mancini, Cedric Mullins and Ryan Mountcastle all flourished under his tutelage, but the change was made nonetheless. Two other hitting coaches in the organization, Tom Eller of Aberdeen and Patrick Jones of Delmarva were also let go.
The minor leagues were especially hard-hit. Gary Kendall, a Sparrows Point High product was dismissed as manager of triple A Norfolk after 21 seasons in the Oriole organization. It's widely believed that Bowie manager Buck Britton could replace him. Kendall's pitching coach Kennie Steenstra was also dismissed.
Also getting the pink slip was a former Oriole pitcher, Alan Mills, who had been manager of the Orioles' Florida Complex League team.
