Caps prospect Jonsson-Fjallby claimed off waivers by Buffalo originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
Capitals prospect Axel Jonsson-Fjallby was claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Sabres on Monday. Washington had placed him on waivers Sunday in order to reassign him to AHL affiliate Hershey, but instead he will be headed up north trying to make the NHL squad for Buffalo.
Jonsson-Fjallby, 23, was selected by the Caps in the fifth round of the 2016 draft. A Swedish forward, he possesses NHL speed and a decent shot. In the NHL, he could possibly contribute as a bottom-six forward who can play on the penalty kill. A good NHL comparable would be Carl Hagelin, though Jonsson-Fjallby may have a better shot.

Inconsistencies plagued Jonsson-Fjallby's game, however, and he was never able to make it to the NHL with Washington's loaded roster. Now he goes to Buffalo where it seems he may have a legitimate chance of making the NHL squad.
If Buffalo decides to send Jonsson-Fjallby to the AHL, he will still have to pass through waviers which could give the Caps the ability to reclaim him, if they are so inclined.
