The Memphis Grizzlies came into the offseason looking to build off of a successful 2020-21 campaign. They qualified for the NBA Play-In Tournament, defeating the San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors to earn the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference.
They matched up with the Utah Jazz, who finished the regular season with the best record in the NBA. Memphis took Game 1 in Salt Lake City but lost the next four games to get eliminated from the postseason.
Despite how the first round went, it was still a step in the right direction for Memphis. While they still have some work to do to become contenders, many expected them to make some moves that would at least cement them among the playoff teams in the Western Conference.
The team made moves, but they were more cost-saving than upgrading the team. The Grizzlies didn’t operate as a team looking to take that next step on the court.
