After never losing more than two games in any of his seven seasons at Ohio State, Urban Meyer has lost four games in a row coaching the Jacksonville Jaguars, and his team has lost 19 consecutive games dating back to last season.
Now, following another embarrassing incident for the 57-year-old married father of three, Meyer has more apologies than he does wins as the head of the Jaguars.
Coming on the heels of a slew of poor decisions since being installed as coach in Jacksonville, including hiring a since-departed strength coach who was accused of making racist remarks and belittling and bullying players, Meyer went viral over the weekend after being filmed cozying up with a young woman at his restaurant in Ohio.
Meyer, who stayed in Ohio after the Jaguars lost to the Bengals on Thursday Night Football, went to Urban Meyer’s Pint House on Friday night with friends and family members. It’s probably good guess that his wife was not one of those family members …
Clearly not pleased with the video going viral from his big night out the day after losing for the fourth time in as many tries as an NFL coach, Meyer said on Monday that he apologized to his team, his family and Jacksonville owner Shad Khan.
“I just apologized to the team and staff for being a distraction,” Meyer said. “Just stupid, and so I explained everything that happened and owned it. Just stupid. Should not have myself in that kind of position. The team, I spoke to a bunch of leaders one-on-one, spoke to all the players. They’re good. They’re focused on Tennessee. I apologized again for being a distraction. A coach should not be a distraction.”
At the NFL level thus far, it doesn’t appear as if Meyer is much of a coach as the Jaguars are one of just two winless teams in the league this season despite having Trevor Lawrence, the No. 1 overall picks in April’s draft, at quarterback.
Meyer and the Jaguars host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, a team they lost seven of their last eight meetings with. A loss to Tennessee would give the Jaguars the second-longest losing streak in NFL history behind only Tampa Bay Bucs, who lost 26 consecutive times over the 1976-77 seasons. Coming off a brutal overtime loss against putrid Jets, the Titans are going to be raring to go in Week 5 so we’d expect the Jags’ slide to continue.
