Beloved Bellaire spot Kamalan Bakery will open a location in the Montrose
Kamalan Bakery, the Asiatown spot known for its layers cakes, fruit and vegetable-flavors buns, smoothies, and teas, will take over the Montrose spot that was formerly Avondale Food and Wine.
Details on the new location are scant, but signage is already up at 240 Westheimer Avenue.
Avondale Food & Wine, the cafe and bottle shop that was originally called L’Olivier, closed in July after 10 years in the neighborhood. Owners Mary Clarkson and Olivier Ciesielski said at the time that they were hoping to reopen in a smaller location.
Third Ward bakery owner Myrtle Zachary Jackson has died of COVID-19
Myrtle Zachary Jackson, owner of Ms. Myrtle’s Bakery Shoppe in Third Ward, died last week after a month-long battle with COVID-19, reports KHOU. Jackson, who was 72, led the family-owned bakery, previously known as Not Jus’ Donuts, for more than two decades. She is survived by her daughter, Rosharon Cotton, who will continue to operate the bakery. The shop will close for a few weeks to mourn Jackson’s death. Cotton said she plans to reopen sometime in November.
Southern Yankee Beer Company has opened its second location in a familiar spot
Southern Yankee Beer Company, the North Houston brewpub known for its pizzas and barrel-aged brews, has opened a second location in the West Alabama spot that formerly house Good Dog Hot Dogs. The Crafthouse, as the second location is called, opened last week at 1312 West Alabama Street, right across of the grounds of The Menil Collection. The menu includes Southern Yankee’s popular pizzas, like the Spicy Goat, with chevre, arugula and mango-habanero glaze, plus sharables like truffle fries and crispy asparagus, salads, and larger dishes including a beer can roast chicken and a pastrami melt. Drinks-wise, expect a rotating menu of Southern Yankee’s beers, craft cocktails, wines, and non-alcoholic options.
