Over the weekend, Queen Elizabeth spoke publicly about Prince Philip, her late husband of almost 74 years, for the first time since his death in April.

The monarch addressed the Scottish Parliament on Saturday as part of the opening ceremony for its sixth session, reminiscing about all the time she and her late husband spent in the country and their great love for its people and places. “I have spoken before of my deep and abiding affection for this wonderful country, and of the many happy memories Prince Philip and I always held of our time here,” the Queen said in her speech. “It is often said that it is the people that make a place, and there are few places where this is truer than in Scotland, as we have seen in recent times.” Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, who is known as the Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, also attended the event.

For the occasion, the royal wore a dark green herringbone wool coat over a gold floral-printed dress, both by Stewart Parvin, with a matching hat by Rachel Trevor Morgan. As is her habit, the Queen also chose a piece of jewelry with special meaning, wearing Queen Mary's diamond thistle brooch on her lapel, which she has worn on multiple visits to Scotland in the past. The thistle has become a symbol of Scotland and its flower is often embroidered into the lace of royal wedding dresses. Camilla also wore a diamond thistle brooch of her own for the outing, pinned to a hunter green coat dress lined in Rothesay tartan by Mr. Roy and finished with a matching green beret by Philip Treacy.

Queen Elizabeth's first solo trip following the Duke of Edinburgh's death was also to Scotland to visit their estate there, Balmoral Castle, where the couple would typically stay from August until the fall. They made their final trip to the Scottish Highlands home together in August 2020.
