Sunday was a wild final day of the 2021 MLB regular season as four teams in the AL entered the afternoon with a chance of claiming the two wild-card spots.
At the end of the day the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox punched their tickets to the postseason by winning their final games – the Yankees beat the Rays in a 1-0 nail-biter and the Red Sox rallied from a 5-1 deficit to beat the Nationals 7-5.
Boston got a 2-run home run from Rafael Devers in the ninth inning and then Nick Pivetta made his first appearance as a reliever this season in the bottom of the ninth and closed things down with this ridiculous pitch:

Fooling Juan Soto is a hard thing to do but Pivetta did just that with that nasty curveball. My goodness.
Twitter had reactions.
For Soto of all people to get fooled 🤢, dudes plate vision has been insane this year. Pivetta said don’t forget to buckle up. https://t.co/jhIcCAVixM

How do you hit a good curveball?! YOU DON’T! And neither does the best hitter in the world. Don’t miss the heater. https://t.co/OGlVtHeVEM

Fooling Juan Soto is a task very few pitchers can say they’ve done and … Nick Pivetta is one of them https://t.co/cCMKF1KtG8
