'I Would Say Lionel Messi, He’s Still the Best Football Player in the World' - Virgil van Dijk on the Best Player He's Faced

Liverpool faced Lionel Messi in what is now known as one of the best semi-finals in Champions League history.

However, we all know what happened in the second leg and that 3-0 advantage meant nothing at all after Divock Origi and Gini Wijnaldum were done with the Spanish side.

Despite losing that game, Messi was instrumental and the only player who cause Liverpool issues in the second leg.

After his contract expired at Barcelona this summer, Messi signed for PSG making him one of the highest paid players ever.

Virgil van Dijk knows how good Messi is but in a recent interview he was asked who he thought the best player in the world was, to which he answered by claiming the 'little magician' still is.

“I would say Lionel Messi, he’s still the best football player in the world. Him and Cristiano [Ronaldo] have been doing unreal numbers in the last decades and it’s incredible what they have achieved.

“But in this case I will choose Messi, we had a tough night at Barcelona [in 2019].”

Most Liverpool fans would argue Mohamed Salah may be better on current form but it's hard to argue with Virgil's assessment.
