Women's Tennis Competes at ITA Regional Championships

October 3, 2021

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Highlighted by freshman Michelle Kleynerman's strong run in both singles and doubles, the Boston University women's tennis team competed at the ITA Northeast Regionals on Army West Point's campus over the weekend.

This year marked the first time that the regional tournament was split into two weekends to allow for more tennis players to compete. In the West Point Regional, players started in the Round of 128 for singles with the eight remaining players advancing to the Super Regionals at Princeton on Oct. 15-17. Doubles opened with the Round of 64 and saw eight duos advance to the Super Regionals as well.

By virtue of her singles performance last spring, sophomore Kaitlin Tan automatically advanced to the 32-player Supers draw. In total, five Terriers combined for a 5-5 singles mark and 3-2 doubles record. Both Kleynerman and junior Erica Di Battista began the singles bracket with a first round bye and advanced to the Round of 16 before coming up just one win short of a Super Regional berth. Kleynerman also collected two wins in doubles action with graduate student Emily Kim before dropping an 8-6 decision in the Round of 16.

In singles, Kleynerman cruised to straight-set victories over Brown's Lindsey Hofflander (6-4, 6-2) and Boston College's Sophie Edwards (6-2, 6-3). Seeded in the No. 1-8 slot, Harvard's Rachel Arbitman halted her run to the Super Regionals with enough breaks of serve in the 6-4, 6-4 decision.

Di Battista posted a straight-set win over Yale's Raissa Lou (7-6, 6-3) and held off a late charge from Army's Cooper Jackson in a 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 victory. In the final contest, she rallied to force a third-set tiebreaker but was eventually eliminated by UMass' No. 9-16 seeded Polina Akimova, 6-2, 4-6, 10-4.

Kim collected the other singles win for the Terriers with a 6-4, 5-7, 10-5 victory over Stony Brook's Loretto Del Carmen Villalba Rubio. She was eliminated in the Round of 64 by Dartmouth's No. 9-16 seeded Ashley Hess (7-6, 6-3).

In doubles, Kleynerman and Kim opened with an 8-5 win over Columbia and then upset No. 9-16 seeded Siena with an 8-5 victory. The duo battled Brown to the end for a Super Regional berth but came up just short, 8-6. Di Battista and senior Shelly Yaloz earned an 8-4 victory over Yale and were eliminated in the Round of 32 by Fordham's No. 9-16 seeded duo.

Following the weekend's results, Tan will be the lone Terrier competing at the Super Regionals hosted by Princeton on Oct. 15-17. The rest of the team will next see action on Oct. 16-17 at the Brown Invitational.
