Park Ji-sung has asked Manchester United fans to stop singing a song about him which contains a racist stereotype.

The 40 year old was asked about the chant which includes a lyric about Koreans allegedly eating dog meat after United fans sang it while Wolves unveiled new signing Hwang Hee-chan at Molineux in August.

"I'm really sorry for him to hear that," Park told the official UTD podcast, as quoted by The Athletic.

"I know that United fans don't mean any offence to him for that song but still I have to educate the fans to stop that word [dog meat], which is usually these days a racial insult to the Korean people.

"That particular word is very discomforting for Korean people, and I really feel very sorry for the younger players who heard that kind of song.

"In Korea, things have changed a lot. It is true that historically we have eaten dog meat but these days, particularly the younger generation, they really hate it. The culture has changed.

"I really request the fans to stop singing that word. It causes discomfort to Korean people when they hear that song. It's time to stop."

Manchester United issued an official statement in support of Park's remarks and have called on supporters to stop singing the chant too.

"Manchester United fully supports Ji-sung's comments and urges fans to respect his wishes," the statement reads.

Park enjoyed a glorious seven years at Old Trafford, lifting four Premier League titles and a Champions League whilst in England.

His former manager Sir Alex Ferguson has always been full of praise for the former PSV Eindhoven man and says one of his biggest regrets is not starting the midfielder in the 2008 Champions League final against Chelsea.

Park Ji-sung's legacy certainly deserves a more appropriate chant from the United faithful.
