Like Beyoncé and Jay Z, or Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith have been regarded as one of Hollywood’s greatest power couples.

Also like those couples, they have had their fair share of marital problems (like almost every marriage). Brangelina split in 2016. Bey detailed Jay’s cheating on her sixth studio album “Lemonade,” which is regarded as her magnum opus.

While it’s been speculated for years, it was revealed during summer 2020 that Will and Jada have had an open marriage. They opened up about their marriage on Jada’s talk show “Red Talk Table” after r&b singer August Alsina confirmed he had an affair with her. This led to a teary red-eyed meme of Will, which has been compared to the infamous Crying Jordan meme.

Hence, Will recently got even more candid with GQ about the period of non-monogamy marriage to Jada.

“The pursuit of truth is the only way to be happy in this lifetime,” Smith told Wesley Lowery via GQ. “And we sort of came to the agreement that authenticity was the release from the shackles of fame and public scrutiny.”

“Jada never believed in conventional marriage.… Jada had family members that had an unconventional relationship. So she grew up in a way that was very different than how I grew up. There were significant endless discussions about, what is relational perfection? What is the perfect way to interact as a couple? And for the large part of our relationship, monogamy was what we chose, not thinking of monogamy as the only relational perfection,” Smith continued.

Though fans began to suspect Will has been miserable in the marriage after Jada said she wanted to learn how to love at 50, according to Rolling Out.

Jada said this during her 50th birthday “Red Table Talk” episode. “I really want to learn how to love,” she said

George Clooney then asked Jada about how she tolerates her husband, only leading to more confusion from Internet fans.

“I think what you really have to learn is how to have a friendship. I mean, really, how do you put up with anybody? How do you put up with yourself? Once you learn how to put up with yourself you really learn how to put up with all others,” she added. “I think, for me, I had so much emotional maturity that I had to do. I really had to take the time to learn how to love myself because how we love ourselves is how we show people how to love us.”

Though, Will has also had relationships outside of their marriage. He told GQ marriage shouldn’t feel like a prison and “everybody has to find their own way.”

“We have given each other trust and freedom, with the belief that everybody has to find their own way. And marriage for us can’t be a prison. And I don’t suggest our road for anybody. I don’t suggest this road for anybody. But the experiences that the freedoms that we’ve given one another and the unconditional support, to me, is the highest definition of love,” he added.
