The life of Oberlin native Mary Burnett Talbert (1866-1923) will be honored at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 22, with the unveiling of a National Votes for Women Trail Marker that will be dedicated in her name.

Talbert, an Oberlin College graduate, dedicated her life to education, service and civil rights in the United States and abroad, according to a news release from the Oberlin Heritage Center.

She was a leader in the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), as well as a delegate to the International Council of Women conference in 1920, the release said.

Talbert championed voting rights as a suffrage advocate and as the vice president of the NAACP anti-lynching committee.

A ceremony with brief remarks will take place in the front yard of the New Union Center for the Arts, 39 S. Main St. in Oberlin.

At 5 p.m., Talbert’s marker will be unveiled near 9 S. Main St., where the Burnett family home once stood.

A reception with lemonade will follow, in the New Union Center’s front yard.

Call 440-774-1700 or email director@oberlinheritage.org by Oct. 20 to RSVP for this event.

The city of Oberlin, Oberlin African-American Genealogy and History Group, Oberlin Heritage Center, NAACP Metro Central Unit 3183 and the William G. Pomeroy Foundation/National Women’s Suffrage Marker Grant Program are sponsors.

Oberlin Heritage Center extends special thanks to FAVA and the Oberlin Center for the Arts; Katrina Walker, Ohio History Service Corps member; the Oberlin College Archives; and Madeline Scott, of the Afro-Historical Association and Buffalo Branch of the NAACP, the release said.

Masks and social distancing are requested at the dedication and unveiling ceremony.

In the event of rain, the event will take place at the same time on Oct. 27.
