The Milwaukee Bucks faced some adversity on their way to winning the 2021 NBA Championship. Their star player, former MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, suffered a knee injury during Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Atlanta Hawks.

The Bucks were able to prevail in the next two games with him sidelined to advance to the Finals. He was cleared to participate in Game 1, but it was anyone’s guess how effective he would be.

While he showed a few signs of the knee injury, he was rather dominant throughout the series against the Suns. In six games he averaged 35.2 points, 13.2 rebounds, and 5.0 assists in 39.8 minutes per game. He also totaled seven steals and 11 blocks with only 14 turnovers.

It was one of the most memorable NBA Finals performances ever, as he scored at least 41 points three times, including 50 in the series-clinching victory. He took home the Finals MVP award, and rightfully so.

As Antetokounmpo and the Bucks prepare for the 2021-22 season, he said that he remains hungry and is not yet satisfied by winning just one title. However, he could be taking things a little easier in the early going as he still works his way back from the knee injury he suffered in the postseason.

“I feel good. Obviously, I gotta do my treatment like always, take care of my body and just manage it. There’s no rush for me here. I’m good to go, but if I feel pain again or whatever the case might be, I have to listen to my body. When you feel pain, it’s your body telling you. It’s protecting you. You can’t go anymore. I’ve played through pain. I don’t think now is the time to risk that. It’s too early in the season, but at the end of the day, I feel good physically, mentally. I’ll do whatever I have to do to be 100 percent.”

Everyone knew that Antetoukunmpo was battling through the injury to help the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA Finals against the Phoenix Suns. But, since he was cleared to play, the extent of the injury may not have been known.
