Atlanta United 2 draws 1-1 vs. Indy Eleven

INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 2, 2021) – Atlanta United 2 played to a 1-1 draw against Indy Eleven at Michael A. Carroll Stadium Saturday night. Aiden McFadden scored the late equalizer to help ATL UTD 2 earn a point on the road. With eight goals this season, McFadden set the team record for most goals in a single season.

Atlanta settled into the match by dominating possession and creating several opportunities in the first half. In the 36th minute, Matías Benítez found Amadou Macky Diop near the left corner of the 18, where the forward went to work and carved up three Indy defenders. Macky Diop made his way near the penalty spot, but he was knocked off the ball and could only get off a toe poke towards goal.

Connor Stanley earned a free kick in the 41st minute. Robert Edwards punched Ajani Fortune’s service and the ball fell to Benítez, who smashed a one-time volley. However, the ball took a deflection on its flight in. ATL UTD 2 completed the half with eight shots, while holding Indy to just two.

Indy found the back of the net first in the 53rd minute. Starting from a quick restart, Ayoze sent in a cross from the left flank into the penalty area to Manuel Arteaga, who headed it into goal.

Atlanta continued to push forward for the equalizer late in the second half. At the death, McFadden leveled the game to secure a point. The play began when Darwin Matheus served a cross in and Bradley Kamdem Fewo headed the ball down to goal. The goalkeeper made the save, but he spilled it and McFadden hammered home the rebound. It was the sixth time ATL UTD 2 has scored in the 89th minute or later to rescue a point in a match this season.

ATL UTD 2 (7-13-9, 31 points) will return to action against Sporting KC II on Oct. 13 at Children’s Mercy Field (ESPN+, 8:00 p.m. ET).
