No charges are expected following an incident where a man entered a home and assaulted a woman before he was fatally shot early Saturday morning.
Officers responded to a shots fired call after 4:15 a.m. on Robney Drive and found a woman beaten and a man shot outside of a home.
The man, Eugene Rhinehart III, 31, of Granada Drive, was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey where he later died, said Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the Sumter Police Department. The 43-year-old woman, of the residence, was taken to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
An initial investigation indicates Rhinehart entered the home uninvited through an unlocked door and located the woman, confronted her and began punching her, according to McGirt.
During the assault, she managed to get a gun that was in the home and shoot Rhinehart, McGirt said. A 28-year-old man was also in the home at the time of the incident.
Notification of Rhinehart’s next of kin was made by the Sumter County Coroner’s Office, which has scheduled an autopsy.
An investigation is continuing.
