The San Diego Padres plan to fire manager Jayce Tingler, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman.

However, the Padres released a statement calling the report "premature."

"Per A.J. Preller, no decision has been made on Jayce (Tingler's) employment status at this time," a Padres spokesperson said, according to The Athletic's Dennis Lin. "Heyman's report is completely premature. He will be managing our game today."

Tingler has managed the Padres the last two seasons, helping them reach the National League Division Series in 2020.

San Diego fell short of the postseason this year after entering the campaign with lofty expectations and a franchise-record $175-million payroll.

Both Tingler and general manager Preller have reportedly faced scrutiny for the Padres' late-season collapse. San Diego posted a 25-42 record in the second half, and star players Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado were seen having a heated dugout confrontation last month.

The 40-year-old Tingler was a runner-up for NL Manager of the Year in his first season as a big-league skipper in 2020. The Padres signed the former minor-league player to a three-year deal in October 2019.
