Yankees' DJ LeMahieu playing through sports hernia, will need offseason surgery

New York Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu is playing through a sports hernia that will require offseason surgery, manager Aaron Boone told reporters Saturday, including MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.

LeMahieu received an injection on Friday and will attempt to play through the injury for the remainder of the season, Boone added. The versatile infielder was absent from the Friday and Saturday games against the Tampa Bay Rays.

LeMahieu exited Thursday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays in the sixth inning with hip soreness. Before Thursday's game, Boone said the three-time Gold Glover had been dealing with hip and groin soreness for a while.

It's unclear how long LeMahieu has been playing through the ailment. He's been solid this season regardless, hitting .268/.349/.362 with 10 home runs and 57 RBI in 150 games.

The Yankees re-signed LeMahieu to a six-year, $90 million extension before the 2021 season began, rewarding him after he finished third in AL MVP voting.

LeMahieu should be good to go for the start of the 2022 season, but it all depends on when he gets the surgery and how long it takes for him to recover.
