Cy Young implications on Saturday night

Julio Urias vs. Corbin Burnes — Let the fun begin

MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers at Arizona Diamondbacks Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

By the time the Dodgers begin their game tonight, they’ll have an answer in regards to the NL West division chase.

First pitch in Los Angeles is at 6:10 p.m. tonight, an hour earlier than normal. They won’t need to be keeping their eyes on the scoreboard, as the Giants play at 1:10 p.m. this afternoon. In all likelihood, the Dodgers will know if they’re still alive in the division hunt by first pitch.

Whether or not that’s the case, LA’s game will still have major Cy Young Award implications.

Corbin Burnes gets the start for Milwaukee, with Julio Urias getting the start for LA. Entering tonight, Burnes has the best ERA among all starters in baseball at 2.29. Not that the ERA crown is the difference-maker in the Cy Young voting, but it certainly helps. Max Scherzer trails at 2.46, with Walker Buehler at 2.49.

In addition to trying to win the ERA title, Burnes is right in the discussion for the Cy Young award along with Scherzer, Buehler and a few others. With a fantastic start to cap his 2021 season, he could add to his already impressive case. If he were to have a bad start, well it could potentially cost him.

Meanwhile, Urias will be going for his 20th win. He’s already going to finish with the most wins in baseball, but having 20 sure sounds a lot more sexy than 19, if you ask me. Urias likely won’t win the Cy Young, but he’ll certainly be receiving votes as he’s having the best season of his career.

In addition to his 19 wins, he owns a 3.01 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and has 188 strikeouts. He’ll certainly be receiving a number of votes as well, and a dominant start today could help him finish even higher.

Hopefully for the Dodgers, tonight’s game will mean something. If it doesn’t, let’s just appreciate this fantastic pitching battle between two of the best in the game.
