DURHAM, N.C. — One man was shot in the parking lot of Durham County Stadium during a homecoming football game on Friday night, officials said.

The man was taken to Duke Regional Hospital after he was shot in the leg outside the game between Northern Durham High School and Riverside High School.

Parent Stephanie Bishop said she witnessed Friday night’s shooting in the parking lot. The game had just ended.

Bishop, along with her children, were leaving the stadium at the time.

"I saw, as we were walking, I saw a loud car honk really close to us so I looked and this gray sedan threw on the gas and, in reverse, ran into a white sedan," Bishop said. "It was very intentional."

Bishop said the driver in one of the vehicles sped out of the parking lot and onto the road. Within seconds, several shots were fired.

"We just fell to the ground," she said. "We were so close I could see the blast from the gun."

Durham City Councilman Mark-Anthony Middleton called the shooting a brazen act.

"In the secular world, these are sacred spaces where we come together for joy and sharing and for a feeling of camaraderie," Middleton said. "To have them violated by gunfire is horrifying."

Another parent, who didn't wish to be named, shared photos of her son's vehicle, saying a bullet went through the backseat of his car as he was leaving the game. She said the bullet entered through the driver side rear window and stopped in the frame between windows.

Dan Gilfort, principal of Northern Durham, wrote in a message that a vehicle drove into the grass and fired shots into the air.

"At this time, we have no information to suggest anyone at the game was being directly threatened," Gilfort wrote on Facebook.

Police did not provide WRAL News with any additional details, and said an investigation into the shooting was ongoing.

"I know that this is a troubling incident. Counselors will be available at school on Monday to support any students with concerns," he said.

Another high school football shooting was reported in Fayetteville on Friday night. Two teenagers were injured outside of the Seventy-First High School. Officials said there will be extra security at Seventy-First on Monday following a social media threat.
