Buff & Blue beat Westcliff to close doubleheader

LA VERNE, Calif. - To open its West Coast trip, GW men's water polo split a Friday doubleheader as part of the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament.

The Buff and Blue were tripped by No. 18 Cal Baptist, 10-5, in the opener before bouncing back to cruise past Westcliff, 15-7, in their second game of the day.

GW 15, Westcliff 7: In game two, the Buff and Blue blasted out to an 8-1 lead in the second quarter and rolled to a convincing win over the Warriors. Eleven different student-athletes scored in the victory at Las Flores Pool.

Andras Levai notched both of his goals in the opening quarter to help GW build a five-goal lead, and scores from Viktor Jovanovic and Kalan Smith to begin the second padded the advantage, which would grow as large as nine in the second half.

Levai, Schroeder, Nick Schroeder and Henry Maas each scored twice for the Buff and Blue, while Smith, Nick Schoening, Logan Kalish, Antonin Kralj, Andrija Sekulic, Bruno Rebessi and Zachary Pendolino also found the net.

Coming off back-to-back MAWPC Defensive Player of the Week awards, goalkeeper Luca Castorina piled up 19 saves vs. the Warriors and also added a pair of steals.

Cal Baptist 10, GW 5: The Buff and Blue got off to a strong defensive start in the opener at Axelrood Pool in Claremont, Calif., but the defending WWPA champion Lancers were eventually able to settle in and seize control.

GW didn't allow a goal over the game's first 11 minutes, 20 seconds before Cal Baptist ran off three straight second-quarter scores for a 3-1 lead.

The Buff and Blue got one back on Kralj's score with 45 seconds left in the opening half but couldn't sustain the momentum out of the break. The Lancers opened the third quarter with three straight goals and ultimately extended their advantage to as much as seven at 10-3 on Simon Taylor's goal with 1:35 remaining.

Sekulic netted all three of his goals after halftime to match a career best and also recorded two steals, two ejections drawn and a field block. In addition to his goal, Kralj chipped in two field blocks, a steal and an ejection drawn, and Schroeder also scored vs. the Lancers.

In net, Castorina was credited with 11 saves in the opener.
