New Jersey Devils: Dawson Mercer Must Make This Roster

Sometimes training camp competitions are only there for show. General managers like the thought of fighting for a roster spot, but usually, they can’t help themselves adding enough forwards and defensemen that it becomes obvious who is going to make the roster. That’s not the case for the New Jersey Devils this season. After all the rumors about Vladimir Tarasenko turned into a lot of nothing, the Devils have two-to-three roster spots available.

Coming into the preseason, it appeared that prospect and former 1st-round pick Dawson Mercer had an outside shot to make the team. There was an opening at center behind Nico Hischier, Jack Hughes, and Michael McLeod. There are also openings at left and right wing depending on what happens with that center position.

The Devils can try Mercer at both positions this preseason, but no matter where the Devils put him so far, he performs. That was clear on Wednesday and it became even more clear on Friday. Even after Mercer missed one of the easiest goals he will ever see (as can be seen on the picture tied to the story), he still came back and showed his immense skill and finishing ability.

That has to hurt for a young player. That didn’t impact him at all. Mercer at 5v5 was insane. He was on the ice for 15 chances and just seven chances against according to Natural Stat Trick. In 13 minutes of even strength ice time, Mercer had two amazing chances, and he scored this beauty.

That move at the end? *chef’s kiss* The New Jersey Devils don’t need to think hard about this. Mercer is a phenomenal talent, and everything he’s doing shows he is ready to make an impact at the NHL level. The Devils need to put the best roster around Hischier and Hughes. There is no “best roster” that doesn’t have Dawson Mercer on it.

He added a finishing that will translate to the NHL. His ability to score in juniors seemed nice, but his playmaking and nonstop motor were what was going to make him an amazing draft pick. Now he can score like a star? Let’s see what he can do right now.
