It was a tough match for Celtic as they lost heavily in Europe again, this time at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen. There were some lessons to be learned from the night, one of them involving the midfield duo.

In many ways it was a strange match. Bayer Leverkusen could have easily conceded more than once if Celtic’s finishing had been better or the German side’s goalkeeper not been at his spectacular best. On the other end of the pitch, the Bundesliga giants could have probably scored more than the four goals that they did.

As has been the case often in recent times, the Celtic defence was not great as things were left very open at the back on a number of occasions. It is not just the defence that needs improving though but the midfield as well.

It was great to see Callum McGregor back in the side. But the duo of Tom Rogic and David Turnbull just has not worked in recent times. They are very similar kind of players and neither of them are known for the defensive side of their games.

Rogic and Turnbull should not be starting together in this Celtic team

Both of them can have an impact on this team and bring a lot to the table, but not together at the same time.

Now, to be honest, Postecoglou has not had too many options to pick his midfield from in recent times, due to injuries. Ryan Christie’s departure on transfer deadline day did not help matters either. But with McGregor back and James McCarthy now coming into contention as well, it might be time to shake things up a bit in the middle of the park.

Either Turnbull or Rogic could be a contender for the Aberdeen match on Sunday, but they should not start together. Postecoglou has a decision to make on his hands.
