Chelsea stumbled to a second consecutive big-game defeat on the back of yet another lifeless performance. The team were lacking in all departments, with very few good showings.

There is very little to dissect in fact, with a poor initial setup exacerbated by worse individual performances. The blame lies equally across the board, with the coach and the players all disappointing.

Thomas Tuchel

Had a surprisingly poor big game for the second time in just a few days. The team’s possession play was all over the place, with few mechanisms to progress the ball and nullify Juventus’ press. The selection of two wingbacks lacking in dynamism made the lives of our attacking midfielders hard, not helped by the fact our midfielders had a bad day in terms of speed of thought.

While the management was undoubtedly poor from Tuchel, there is still plenty of credit in the bank. He deserves his due share of criticism for this game and our recent poor form — both in wins and defeats — but that doesn’t cloud the work he has done so far.

Édouard Mendy — GK

Could not have done much better with the goal but was not called into action otherwise.

Was great on the ball — nailing both the quality and speed of passes — and looked more proactive than he has in a long while.

Antonio Rüdiger — LCB

Like the other two center backs, he was pretty good on the ball considering the overall limitations in the team. Was not called into defensive action often but did well when he was.

Marcos Alonso — LWB

Had a pretty poor performance. One of Alonso’s underrated qualities has been his ball-striking and technique and both were lacking against Juve. Looked very jaded while running too.

Could have done a lot better. Was nullified with ease on the ball — continuing a rather worrying decline bar the Zenit game — and was not much better defensively. Most of this can be attributed to tiredness, however.

Mateo Kovačić — LCM

Got on the ball a lot and executed some very nice passes but his decision-making could have been quicker and sharper at times, especially on transitions. However, he did not have a poor game by any means. His sheer volume of progressive actions is mightily impressive by itself, regardless of other concerns.

Kai Havertz — RW/R-AM

Was not found often on the ball, especially between the lines. It is equally Havertz’s fault, his teammates’ and Tuchel’s. His lack of dangerous possessions made Chelsea very weak while attacking. Could have done better in terms of finishing.

The front 3 may all have a lot of progressive passes received but they were in broadly harmless positions. Not all progressive passes are created equal!

Romelu Lukaku – CF

Had exactly one good chance and fluffed it late in the game. However, it must be stated that we are not utilizing him properly. His best form at Inter came with other offensive players — be it Lautaro, Alexis or even Perišić — around him but he is often left on an island at Chelsea.

The complaints and causes with Ziyech are very similar to Havertz: execution and vision were below-par and worse than other attacking midfielders. Ziyech’s recent form has been underwhelming, to say the least.

Ben Chilwell (46th minute) – Looked rusty, as one would expect. Was not much of an improvement over Alonso, with his energy being negated by technical rust.
