The numbers behind the game

Overview

Chelsea stumbled to a second consecutive big-game defeat on the back of yet another lifeless performance. The team were lacking in all departments, with very few good showings.

There is very little to dissect in fact, with a poor initial setup exacerbated by worse individual performances. The blame lies equally across the board, with the coach and the players all disappointing.

Match statistics

Stats are from fbref.

Note: some statistics on the player charts might not corroborate with those presented in the “stats of note” sections. This is because the stats for the charts are obtained from a different source and not fbref. In most cases, the differences will be minimal.

Individual ratings

Thomas Tuchel

Had a surprisingly poor big game for the second time in just a few days. The team’s possession play was all over the place, with few mechanisms to progress the ball and nullify Juventus’ press. The selection of two wingbacks lacking in dynamism made the lives of our attacking midfielders hard, not helped by the fact our midfielders had a bad day in terms of speed of thought.

While the management was undoubtedly poor from Tuchel, there is still plenty of credit in the bank. He deserves his due share of criticism for this game and our recent poor form — both in wins and defeats — but that doesn’t cloud the work he has done so far.

RATING: 5

Édouard Mendy — GK

Could not have done much better with the goal but was not called into action otherwise.

Stats of note
2 passes over 40 yards completed (5 attempted)
1 cross collected (1 faced)
2 defensive action outside the box

RATING: 6

César Azpilicueta — RWB

Had a subdued performance, with his lack of pace severely hindering our offensive play.

Stats of note
8 recoveries - Joint 3rd
2 aerial duels won (2 contested) - Joint 3rd

RATING: 6

Andreas Christensen — RCB

Was great on the ball — nailing both the quality and speed of passes — and looked more proactive than he has in a long while.

Stats of note
3 interceptions - 1st
8 progressive passes - 2nd
11 progressive carries - 2nd
4 carries into final third - 2nd
2 tackles - 3rd
9 passes into final third - Joint 3rd
2 aerial duels won (2 contested) - Joint 3rd

RATING: 7.5

Thiago Silva — CB

Was good on the ball but not as much as Christensen. Was not always secure in defensive transitions.

Stats of note
11 recoveries - 1st
3 shots - Joint 1st
7 progressive passes - 3rd
4 touches in box - 3rd
2 aerial duels won (2 contested) - Joint 3rd

RATING: 6.5

Antonio Rüdiger — LCB

Like the other two center backs, he was pretty good on the ball considering the overall limitations in the team. Was not called into defensive action often but did well when he was.

Stats of note
13 passes into final third - 2nd
3 tackles - 2nd
9 progressive carries - 3rd
3 carries into final third - Joint 3rd
8 recoveries - Joint 3rd

RATING: 6.5

Marcos Alonso — LWB

Had a pretty poor performance. One of Alonso’s underrated qualities has been his ball-striking and technique and both were lacking against Juve. Looked very jaded while running too.

Stats of note
2 interceptions - Joint 2nd

RATING: 5.5

Jorginho — RCM

Could have done a lot better. Was nullified with ease on the ball — continuing a rather worrying decline bar the Zenit game — and was not much better defensively. Most of this can be attributed to tiredness, however.

Stats of note
9 recoveries - 2nd
14 pressures - 3rd

RATING: 5.5

Mateo Kovačić — LCM

Got on the ball a lot and executed some very nice passes but his decision-making could have been quicker and sharper at times, especially on transitions. However, he did not have a poor game by any means. His sheer volume of progressive actions is mightily impressive by itself, regardless of other concerns.

Stats of note
24 passes into final third - 1st
5 passes into box - 1st
12 progressive passes - 1st
5 tackles - 1st
22 progressive carries - 1st
11 carries into final third - 1st
2 successful dribbles (2 attempted) - Joint 1st
16 pressures - 2nd
2 interceptions - Joint 2nd

RATING: 7.5

Kai Havertz — RW/R-AM

Was not found often on the ball, especially between the lines. It is equally Havertz’s fault, his teammates’ and Tuchel’s. His lack of dangerous possessions made Chelsea very weak while attacking. Could have done better in terms of finishing.

The front 3 may all have a lot of progressive passes received but they were in broadly harmless positions. Not all progressive passes are created equal!

Stats of note
18 pressures - 1st
3 shots - Joint 1st
10 touches in box - 2nd
8 progressive passes received - 2nd
3 aerial duels won (6 contested) - 2nd
2 interceptions - Joint 2nd

RATING: 5.5

Romelu Lukaku – CF

Had exactly one good chance and fluffed it late in the game. However, it must be stated that we are not utilizing him properly. His best form at Inter came with other offensive players — be it Lautaro, Alexis or even Perišić — around him but he is often left on an island at Chelsea.

Stats of note
11 touches in box - 1st
14 progressive passes received - 1st
3 shots - Joint 1st
2 passes into box - 3rd

RATING: 5.5

Hakim Ziyech – LW/L-AM

The complaints and causes with Ziyech are very similar to Havertz: execution and vision were below-par and worse than other attacking midfielders. Ziyech’s recent form has been underwhelming, to say the least.

Stats of note
7 progressive passes received - 3rd

RATING: 5

Substitutes

Ben Chilwell (46th minute) – Looked rusty, as one would expect. Was not much of an improvement over Alonso, with his energy being negated by technical rust.

Stats of note
3 shot-creating actions - 2nd

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (62nd minute) – Looked sharp, especially in tight spaces.

Stats of note
4 shot-creating actions - Joint 1st
2 successful dribbles (4 attempted) - Joint 1st

Callum Hudson-Odoi (62nd minute) – Was arguably the team’s best attacking player, although that may not mean much on a thoroughly bad night for everyone.

Stats of note
4 shot-creating actions - Joint 1st
2 successful dribbles (4 attempted) - Joint 1st
3 passes into box - 2nd

Trevoh Chalobah (62nd minute) – After a shaky start, he looked assured and contributed on both sides of the ball.

Stats of note
4 clearances - 1st
6 aerial duels won (7 contested) - 1st
3 carries into final third - Joint 3rd

Ross Barkley (75th minute) – Created a good chance for Lukaku late in the game.

Stats of note
3 carries into final third - Joint 3rd
