George Russell is going to have a breakout season in 2022, and finally get to show off his true skills driving for Mercedes.

Russell is a British Formula 1 driver who has been contracted with Williams since 2019 when he made his racing debut at the Austrian Grand Prix.

The 23-year old is known to be one of the elite drivers on the grid, but has not been able to show his true skills due to not having a state of the art car. He is fast, good hitting and getting out of the corners. But is held back due to a car that is low budgeted.

In Formula 1 it is all about money and how much owners are willing to spend in order for their teams to win. Teams like Mercedes, Red Bull, and McLaren have deep pockets, unlike Williams not really being those top teams known to have money to spend.

It wasn’t until this season during the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix when he scored his first point for the Williams team since joining. Points is when a driver finishes in the top 10 positions, one to the tenth driver.

But people got to see what he can do when you put him in a competitive car during his short Mercedes debut in the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix.

He got a seat for a short while in the Mercedes when the current driver and 7-time world champion Lewis Hamilton was out due to testing positive for COVID-19.

When qualifying he placed second on the grid, and would start on that place during race day. That was his highest placing in his career for F1.

On race day he would jump from second to first place leading the race for the remainder of the night, having announcers surprised but at the same time not as shocked how good he is when put in a fast car.

It is remarkable the kind of skill and poise he had to go from a Williams car to a Mercedes to drive like he’s been the top driver.

He was beating the second driver for Mercedes, Valtteri Bottas, and he had been in the car for five-years. Fans on social media were happy to see a driver like him finally get the chance to be on top, and get his shot to show his true potential.

But it would go from a high to misfortunate night when his tires would get a puncture, and he would have to pit, losing first place.

He would get points for the team in general but would lose a podium spot in the end to finish in the top three.

It was a heartbreaking loss, and hearing his voice you knew he wanted to win badly for the team, and it wasn’t his team in the first place. But that’s the kind of person he is, wanting to win no matter what.

That would not be the only time people will see him in the Mercedes car; as of next season for 2022 he will take Bottas’ racing seat. It is written that he will have a more successful career with Mercedes and possibly a world championship.
