Joint School Services Committee chooses middle, high school names for Alleghany Highlands Public Schools

ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — During a Tuesday meeting, the Joint School Services Committee for Alleghany County and Covington chose the names of the high school and middle school that will go into effect when the two school divisions officially consolidate as Alleghany Highlands Public Schools.

According to a Facebook post from Alleghany County Public Schools on Thursday, Sept. 30, the schools will officially be named Alleghany High School and Covington Middle School starting on July 1, 2023.

When asked about the school names, officials say that both Chairman Jacob Wright of the Alleghany County School Board and Vice Chairman Jonathan Arritt of the Covington School Board expressed their excitement to bring the traditions of each school division to the new division, including the educational opportunities.

The Joint School Services Committee team will also be made up of an equal representation of Alleghany County and the City of Covington.

Both Alleghany High School and Covington Middle School will have the same mascot: the cougars.

At this time, colors for the high school and middle school still need to be determined. Students will be able to weigh in on the colors in a vote and then the Joint School Services Committee will use the results as part of the decision-making process.

Alleghany Highlands Public Schools includes Iron Gate, Clifton Forge, Covington, and Alleghany County.
