In a move that would likely make his handyman character Jack Pearson proud, Milo Ventimiglia is the latest star to partner with Lowe’s as part of the home improvement retailer’s House of Curators series.

Fresh off a summer of traveling, the This Is Us star has curated two affordable collections — dubbed California Modern and Room to Roam — of over 80 pieces of furniture, lighting, bedding and decor inspired by his Airstream adventures and his California lifestyle. (Past curators have included fitness influencer Hannah Bronfman and style icon Iris Apfel.)

“I’ve done a ton of DIY projects around my house, and definitely been to Lowe’s one to 10 times a week,” Ventimiglia tells The Hollywood Reporter over a video chat at his L.A. home, where pieces from the line (like an industrial-modern bookcase and wall art) were spotted in the background. After connecting with the retailer a few months back, “[The collaboration] kind of settled into this really nice partnership where we were aligned in how we view the makeup of a home, the comfort of the home; [me] telling them what I wanted to do within the parameters of what they have in their catalog.”

He adds, “When I was going through the curation of Lowe’s, I [thought], ‘Wow they’re actually things I’d find out on the road.’ Anything from a simple painting or photograph, or a rug you might pick up in New Mexico, woven baskets. But I don’t think I’ve ever picked up a piece of furniture or chair while I’m traveling.”

Ventimiglia looked to his upbringing in the Golden State when selecting pieces for the collections. Raised in Anaheim (once known for its orange groves and now home to Disneyland, the Mighty Ducks hockey team and the Los Angeles Angels baseball team), the 44-year-old explains that he had the “palette of California” in mind rather than specific landmarks when choosing his favorite pieces. “I didn’t really pick one place, like, ‘I’ve got to look for things to recreate Griffith Park, or the beach or Disneyland … We’ve got these full blues skies that [can be] a little brown and hazy; the sunsets that are golden, the natural tones of brown and deep green that settles into a lot the landscape. I think a lot of it was just looking up and looking down [around me].”

The Southern California-bred actor is currently guest-starring on The Marvelous Ms. Maisel and filming the sixth and last season of This Is Us, in which he portrays beloved dad Jack Pearson. Ahead of his final days on the NBC series’ set, Ventimiglia spent the summer road-tripping through national parks in California, Nevada and Utah (including Yosemite, Moab and Zion) and Fort Bragg and exploring Switzerland, as seen in his recent Instagram photo dump.

Ventimiglia says that some pieces from his Lowe’s curation joined him on the road. “There were a handful of things that I hung onto, mostly dish towels and rugs, functional pieces. You have to stay away from breakable stuff,” he advises. “Wherever you choose to call home, you need to have those comforts and inspirations. There is something about if you’re going to a national park like Yosemite for a week. Once you get there you can just set up, you can pull things that just feel home, and tuck them away in a drawer without towing too much weight.”

Being tight on space is also why “I’m going to wear the same jeans” for weeks, Ventimiglia jokes.

As for his most recent Lowe’s haul, “I think I was getting some concrete tap screws a three weeks ago. I carry a cone inside my Airstream so whenever I park, [I put it] on the outside edge,” including on the curb at his home to save a parking spot on the street, he tells THR. His bright orange road accessories began disappearing, so “I started filling [them] with concrete and rebar to make them undesirable to take. It’s a little embarrassing. Nobody’s going to take my cones now!”

“It’s not a joke, like, ‘Let’s go screw with Milo!’ Cones are just a commodity, people don’t think about it,” he quips.

For his next big project, Ventimiglia says he’s eyeing a makeover for the home he’s lived in for the past 25 years, or perhaps building a new house altogether. “Maybe go from darker woods to lighter woods, or try going from different walnuts. I think my design at this point is I feel like outgrown my house or find a new architectural style. My style of it is definitely [What I] call modern comfort …I’ve got a lot of concrete, a lot of architectural CMUs [concrete blocks], a lot of glass, but at the same time there’s a lot of natural tones greenery earthen tones, something that kind of looks like [a mix of] Walt Whitman and Bruce Wayne.”
