CRYSTAL FALLS — A Sidnaw man pleaded guilty to a pair of weapons charges at a supplemental pretrial conference in Iron County Trial Court on Sept. 20.
Jonathon Henry Hagen, 35, pleaded guilty to an amended charge of attempted possession of a loaded firearm (a 1-year misdemeanor) and possession of a firearm under the influence of liquor (a 93-day misdemeanor).
Hagen appeared at the hearing via Zoom from Three Rivers.
The plea agreement between Iron County Prosecuting Attorney Chad DeRouin and Hagen’s attorney, Becket Jones of Kalamazoo, amended the original charge of possession of a loaded firearm in or upon a vehicle (a 2-year high court misdemeanor).
The agreement also called for a 45-day jail cap, though Judge Donald Powell is not bound by that cap when he sentences Hagen on Monday, Nov. 8.
If Powell sentences Hagen to more than a 45-day jail term, Hagen can withdraw his guilty plea and the process will restart.
In the hearing, Hagen admitted that on March 7, 2021, he was in Hematite Township and was sitting in a parked vehicle with a 30-30 rifle and a .22. When asked if they were loaded, Hagen said “to my understanding.”
He also admitted that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time.
In another hearing, Doug Allen Goriesky, 79, of Iron River was bound over to circuit court and pleaded not guilty to one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, in this case a pneumatic rifle. The felonious assault charge was without intending to commit murder or inflict great bodily harm less than murder.
The charge is a 4-year felony. The incident took place on July 26 of this year.
A pretrial conference has been scheduled for Oct. 18 at 11:15 a.m.
