KALAMAZOO, MI — A man accused of fatally shooting another man in the middle of the day, near downtown Kalamazoo, is headed toward a jury trial.
DeAundray Shaw, 38, appeared for a preliminary examination Sept. 28 before Kalamazoo County District Judge Richard Santoni. In the end, Santoni ruled that Shaw’s case be sent to Kalamazoo County Circuit Court because there was probable cause Shaw was involved.
Shaw is accused of shooting Devin Hazen, 27, on Aug. 10 in the 700 block of West Kalamazoo Avenue. Shaw was arrested that same day near an apartment complex in the 700 block of Kilgore Avenue.

Shaw is charged with one felony charge each of open murder, possession of a weapon by a felon, possession of ammunition by a felon and carrying a concealed weapon in a motor vehicle. He is also facing two counts of felony firearms.
Shaw and Hazen had both dated the same woman, Jasmine Williams, at different times, she testified during the in-person hearing on Tuesday. Williams and Shaw have a child together.
The men had seen each other the day of the shooting, Williams said.
Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Detective Steve Seiser interviewed Shaw on Aug. 11, the day after the shooting.
During the interview, Shaw confessed to the shooting, Seiser testified. Shaw and Hazen first saw each other on Gull Road near Riverview Drive, and Hazen tried to run Shaw off the road, Seiser said Shaw told him.
Shaw called 911 and told dispatch he was being followed, Seiser said. Both men drove their vehicles west on Gull Road to the traffic circle at the intersection with Harrison Street and Ransom Streets, Seiser testified.
They took different exits at the traffic circle, Shaw told Seiser. Shaw then told dispatch he did not want police to respond, Seiser said.
Shaw told Seiser he then drove through downtown and went west on Kalamazoo Avenue where he saw Hazen’s car behind him and turn into a driveway.
Shaw then pulled over because he was angry and wanted to get Hazen in trouble, Seiser said. Shaw also said he feared for his safety.
With a Glock pistol in his hand, Shaw then walked up to the car Hazen was in, Seiser testified. Hazen then slightly backed up the car, Seiser said.
Shaw is off to the side and “easily gotten away from it,” Seiser said.
Shaw said Hazen was reaching under the seat and he wasn’t sure what was going to happen, and Shaw said he shot into the car, Seiser said.
There is a video that captured what happened, Seiser said. The video was not shown during the preliminary examination.
Jasmine Williams was on the phone with Hazen when she said she heard gunshots, groaning and the silence.
“I said his name like twice because I was hoping he had dropped his phone or something,” Williams said. “Then I hung up and called the police.”
Two workers were working on the roof of an apartment building down the street, the men testified Tuesday. José Portilla said when they heard a gunshot, he looked in the direction the sound came from and then heard five or six more shots.
He said he then saw a man in a white T-shirt and jeans running away from the scene. He could not say if Shaw was the man he saw, because it was so far away.
Carlos Torres also testified he heard about six shots and saw a man in a white T-shirt running away.
“The shooting in this case is a tragic situation,” Santoni said. “Based on the testimony I’ve heard today, it is my belief and findings that during the entire process DeAundray Shaw was the aggressor.
“He was creating these scenarios to justify his shooting Devin Hazen. In fact, the second contact had to be coincidental and serendipitous. Hazen pulls into the driveway, there is absolutely no reason for Shaw to approach him with a firearm, absolutely no reason.”
Shaw was previously denied bond, and he is held at the Kalamazoo County Jail.
