What If...? Head Writer Teases The Watcher's Bigger Involvement

In the MCU animated series What If...?, the Watcher is seen as the narrator/observer of the different events that are happening in the multiverse. We never see him interfere or get involved in the situations, even in a world-ending event that was depicted in the Doctor Strange Supreme episode. Fans have been wondering if the Watcher will just say as the "watcher" or will he get eventually involved?

During a recent interview with EW, What If...? head writer A.C. Bradley addressed the Watcher's role in the series as it progressed and if the character will actually get involved in the events, especially in the last two remaining episodes of the season.

"He starts off very distant and literally watching from afar, but for so many of us, Marvel movies have become more than just entertainment," Bradley said. "Marvel movies have become more and more of a cultural touchstone and a bigger part of our lexicon, so the notion that, for the Watcher, as he peruses these multiverses, as he lives through these heroes, as he suffers their triumphs and their tragedies, he becomes also more emotionally invested, and therefore becomes more and more part of their world and wants to be more part of their world even though he knows he's not supposed to."

In the end, the writer teased, "Going into the finale, a major source of tension is: Will the Watcher ever break his oath? Or will he remain who he is? Will he stay the Watcher, only observing the triumphs and tragedies? Will there ever be a story that forces his hand?"

Based on the quotes from the writer, it seems like the Watcher will have a bigger involvement in the remaining episodes, instead of staying as an observer of the events and narrate for the viewers. After all, they revealed in the same interview that the characters that we saw from the past episodes will team up in the finale in order to fight Ultron. Perhaps the Watcher did actually interfere which is why they were able to work together on the same universe. We will find out soon enough.
