Repairs that are now underway on southbound M-53 between M-59 and 18 1/2 Mile Road will reduce traffic to one lane in both directions until work is done in early October.
The Michigan Department of Transportation announced work began on southbound M-53 on Monday morning and are expected to continue through Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m. Work on the northbound section of M-53 was scheduled to begin Tuesday morning. Work in that direction is expected to conclude Saturday, Oct. 2 at 4 p.m.
Diane Cross of the MDOT Office of Communications said the work is being done to provide a smoother, safer driving surface at the bridge approaches.
That section of roadway dumps southbound motorists from the M-53 expressway to Van Dyke Avenue and directs northbound motorists from Van Dyke to M-53.
