Lysell Earns Another Look As Boston Bruins Make 1st Camp Cuts

BRIGHTON, Mass — While it’s been a certainty for some time that things are pretty close to locked with the Boston Bruins NHL roster in this training camp, young winger Fabian Lysell continues to carve out a favorable first impression. The 18-year-old Swedish winger will get another look in an exhibition game for the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night against the New York Ranger after earning the playing time through his performance in Sunday’s preseason opener vs. the Washington Capitals.

“I thought [Lysell] certainly did enough to merit getting another look at him early,” said Boston Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy. “He seemed to be not all affected by playing in that environment and there will be another tough one [Tuesday] in New York [against a team] that wants to change the way they play a little bit. As a young guy just going in and playing his game is probably a testament to his character, and his willingness to compete.”

Lysell finished tied for the team lead with three shots on net in his 14:39 of ice time with five shot attempts, flashed his blazing speed at times during the game and even mixed it up around the front of the Capitals net with NHL guys like Dmitry Orlov out there on the ice.

Needless to say the Boston Bruins coaching staff is watching and they’re seeing exactly what made him a first round pick over the summer, even if he’s eventually going to wind up in the WHL with the Vancouver Giants this season.

“He was around the puck, pulled it to space when he needed to. Attacked the front of the net, pushed back when he had to. Made a heck of a play on the wall late to get it to the middle for a scoring chance,” said Boston Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy said of Lysell. “So, he did a lot of things well. Attacked, didn’t look flustered and strong on his skates. A lot of good things for his first game. I thought he did a real nice job.”

It’s all good news for Lysell, who has steadily improved over the last week from the start of the Boston Bruins rookie camp, and is showing off the blazing skating speed, soft hands and skill set that see him as the most skilled B’s prospect since they drafted right winger David Pastrnak seven years ago. Meanwhile, the Boston Bruins did make a couple of first cuts from training camp at the start of this week sending sixth round pick Ryan Mast back to the OHL’s Sarnia Sting, and camp invite Noah Dorey was similarly sent back to the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets.
