European Center of Music, l’Opéra-Comique & Centre National des Armées to Celebrate 200th Birthday of Pauline Viardot

Virginia’s Victory Hall Opera will present a unique rendition of a classic masterwork spotlighting deaf performers. On March 21, 2023, the company will showcase Gluck’s “Orpheus and Eurydice” at the Old Cabell Hall at the University of Virginia. The work will feature deaf stars Amber Zion and John Maucere as they battle numerous personal challenges at the hands of their doctor Warren “Wawa” Snipe. Within the framework is Gluck’s famed opera with new texts written by Miriam Gordon-Stewart with poetry by Gregory Orr that will be performed in ASL. The opera will be sung in Italian.

Uncovered Opera is set to showcase a unique production of Verdi’s “Macbeth” starting on Feb. 25, 2023. Taking on the title role will be Emil Vincenzi and Robert Byford with Marianne Town Smith and Anna Loveday rotating as Lady Macbeth. André Andrade stars as Banco while Davide Basso and Ernesto Vacarezza will share the role of Macduff. Melvin Claridge will be Malcolm and Adam Brown will be the Medico. Finally. Alice Usher and Alicia Mallace-Goulbourne will take turns as the Dama.

The Teatro Real de Madrid is set to present the modern European premiere of Francesco Corselli’s “Achille in Schiro” starting on Feb. 17, 2023. The opera, which will be presented in co-production with the Theater an der Wien, will run through Feb. 25, 2023 for a total of five performances. Mariame Clément directs a cast starring countertenors Franco Fagioli (Achille, Pirra) and Tim Mead (Ulisse); sopranos Francesca Aspromonte (Deidamia) and Sabina Puertolas (Teagene); tenors Krystian Adam (Arcade) and Juan Sancho and (Nearco), and bass Mirco Palazzi (Licomede). Ivor Bolton conducts the Coro Titutal del Teatro Madrid and the Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla.

The Deutsche Oper Berlin has announced that Aviel Cahn will be the company’s next Intendant. Cahn, who is the current director of the Grand Théâtre de Genève, is set to commence his tenure on August 1, 2026. He will succeed Dietmar Schwarz, whose contract with the Deutsche Oper Berlin ends in 2025; in between the two tenures, the company will seek out an interim director.

San Francisco Opera and the Merola Opera Program have announced the 2023 Schwabacher Recital Series. Professor Paul Goldmark of Case Western Reserve University is set to present “Oh, Bwunhilde you’re so lovely:” Wagner’s Music in Classic Hollywood Cartoons. The showcase will take place on Feb. 17, 2023, between 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the National Opera Center in New York City.

Famed mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke will appear at an upcoming concert presented by Music of Remembrance scheduled for March 19, 2023. The mezzo will perform Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer’s “Intonations: Songs from Violins of Hope.” She will appear alongside solo violinist Mikhail Shmidt, youth violinist Zoe Lonsinger. Other instrumentalists performing on this piece include violinists Artur Girsky and Elizabeth Phelps as well as violist Susan Gulkis Assadi, and cellist Walter Gray.

The Santa Fe Opera will host a costume sale on Saturday, March 11, 2023 in Stieren Orchestra Hall at the Santa Fe Opera. The sale will feature costumes, fabrics, and accessories including hats, masks, shoes, and more from past company productions, ranging in style from Baroque to Contemporary, all priced to sell.

The New York Philharmonic has announced that Gustavo Dudamel will become the Orchestra’s next Music and Artistic Director. The organization said that during the 2026–27 season, Dudamel will begin a five-year term, becoming the 27th conductor to preside over the NY Phil. Dudamel will serve as Music Director Designate during the 2025–26 season.

Leah Hawkins is set to perform in the Marian Anderson Vocal Award Recital at The Kennedy Center on Feb. 12, 2023. The soprano, who is this year’s recipient of the major honor, will perform music by Hairston, Wagner, Poulenc, Copland, Grant Still, Ashbourne, and the Kennedy Center premiere of Barnes’ “Proverbs.”

Teatro Grattacielo has announced its 2022-23 season. The company will kick things off with “Don Giovanni” in co-production with the Mid-Atlantic Chamber Orchestra. Jason Tramm will conduct while Stefanos Koroneos directs. The performance will feature Enes Pektas, Lucas Bouk, and Ashton Jones as Don Giovanni; Logan Dooley as Leporello; William Mouat and Rick Agster as Commendatore; Sara Kennedy, Ashia Barnes, and Stephanie Rivero as Donna Anna; Juan José Beltrán Carmona and Pedro Barrera as Don Ottavio; Kathleen Echols, Eun Byoul Song, and Stephanie Lorenz as Donna Elvira; Seongeun Luna Park, Alana Sha’I, and Taylor Consiglio as Zerlina; Minki Hong as Masetto, and Omar Howard as Miss Shangay Lily.

Adolphus Hailstork has received the Composers Now 2023 Vision Award. Hailstork was awarded on Jan. 30, 2023. He received the reward remotely. He has composed a wide range of works, including three operas: “Joshua’s Boots,” “Paul Laurence Dunbar: Common Ground,” and “Rise for Freedom: The John P. Parker.”

The Semperoper Dresden is set to revive a production of “Ariadne auf Naxos.”. The production by David Hermann will return for the first time since it premiered in 2018. The work will star Catherine Hunold in the title role, Sarah Aristidou as Zerbinetta, Angela Brower as the Composer, and Gregory Kunde in his role debut as Bacchus.

Portland Opera will continue its 2022-23 season with “Thumbprint,” an opera inspired by the true story of Mukhtar Mai, written by composer Kamala Sankaram,. The work will be showcased on March 18, 22, 24 and 26, 2023 at the Newmark Theatre. The Los Angeles Master Chorale has announced the next two major shows in its 2022-23 season. First up is “Choose Something Like A Star.” The showcase, which will be directed by Artistic Director Grant Gershon, is set to take place on Feb. 12, 2023 at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

The International Conductor’s Guild (ICG), in collaboration with La Asociación Española de Directores de Orquesta (AESDO) and with the support of Berklee College of Music Valencia, held their 2023 International Conference in Valencia, Spain, in mid-January. ICG is a service organization focused on advancing the art and profession of conducting.

On February 11, 2023, Opera Orlando will launch their Spring Masterclass Series. Held at the Broadway United Methodist Church, the series will open on with a class by composer and conductor Nicolas Giusti; the Roman-born conductor has led performances around the world and last appeared with OO in their 2019 production of “The Marriage of Figaro.”
