KENOSHA, Wis. — A Kenosha pastor is going to great lengths to share a message about the need for legislation to stop climate change.

It comes as the U.S. House prepares to take up several climate related topics in the reconciliation bill as soon as later this week.

Rev. Jonathan Barker of Grace Lutheran Church in Kenosha said he is fasting to show support for the passage of climate reform legislation. While Barker says they journey likely will not be easy, it is a way to spread the word about the need for climate reform.

“I truly believe this week will be remembered in 500 years what our leaders do,” Barker said. “What our Senators and Congressional leaders do, but also each one of us and how we act and how we vote and how we pray, fast, organize, and make calls to our leaders.”

While Barker may be only one person, he feels he has the power to send a message. As with other movements in the past including the fight for civil rights and to free the slaves, Barker said Christians can have a powerful voice in the fight for climate reform.

“Christians, church basements, that has been a place where true, transformative love for neighbor changes have happened,” Barker said.

Barker said he does not know exactly how long he will continue his fast. He plans to reevaluate weekly and says he will stop if he drops below 6% body fat or if other health issues develop.
