DECATUR -- Decatur High School girls got their chance to meet on the gridiron for a friendly game of powderpuff football in Bulldog Stadium Thursday afternoon.

On the Monday before the event, only six girls signed up for the Bulldog Powderpuff football contest. At that point, school officials were ready to cancel. But hours before the event, enough girls signed up to make two teams. So at 5 p.m, the girls, along with some members of the varsity and junior high football teams took the field at Bulldog Stadium for the first football contest of its kind in Decatur.

The rules for the game are simple. Everybody is a quarterback. The ball is passed between the players on each team. But the person with the ball could only pass and could not run. Likewise, the passer could not be tackled while holding the ball. If the receiver drops the ball during a pass reception, it goes to the other team. Touchdowns count six points, while a field goal earns the team a point, for a total of seven points.

The boys joined in during the first half. It was an even contest until the end when the blue team took a one-point 11-10 lead.

For the second half, the boys dropped out and it was all girls football.

The white team developed a game plan where the girls were stretched along the field, some down the center, and a few along the sidelines. Some of the players possessed the ability to make long passes while others had good catching skills. This worked to their advantage as they passed the ball down the field for several touchdowns.

When time finally ran out, the white team claimed the win, 26-11, over the blue team.
